What can a weltwärts year turn into – even years after returning? In this Community Talk, Emily Wilbrand shares her story and shows how an idea turned into an engaged, successful nonprofit. A few years after her weltwärts year in Togo, Emily founded Woé zon loo e.V.. For over six years, the association has supported her former host organization and other local projects, raised around €250,000, won multiple awards – including the Bundespreis from startsocial and the Engagement Award from the German National Academic Foundation – and invested continuously in education and women’s projects in Togo. Emily will take you through her journey: from the first steps of founding a nonprofit, to organizing effective work with clear roles, tasks, and typical challenges, to planning, funding, and implementing projects with long-term impact. She shares honest insights, learnings, and experiences from more than six years of successful engagement. The talk is for everyone interested in volunteering at nonprofits, as well as for former weltwärts participants who want to get involved with Woé zon loo in a variety of roles. Emily will start with a personal input and impressions from her work (15–20 minutes), followed by space for discussion, questions, and exchange.
